Topic 05

Living in French society in the civic exam

This is the most concrete topic of the syllabus, and often the most reassuring: it deals with things you have already done. School, doctor, employment contract, town hall, emergency numbers: the exam checks that you know who to turn to, and in what order. Mistakes rarely come from ignorance; they come from confusing two counters.

In French CIVIC itself runs in French, like the exam.

Behind these practical questions lies a single logic: France organises access to school, health, work and housing through clearly identified public services. Knowing which one does what is the heart of this topic.

What to remember

One idea per line. Figures stand out: dates, terms of office and phone numbers are learnt exactly as written.

School
  • State school is free and secular, and education there is compulsory from 3 to 16.
  • The path runs from nursery school to primary school, then to collège and lycée.
  • You register a child for primary school at the town hall.
Health
  • The Assurance maladie reimburses part of your care; the carte Vitale is what it runs on.
  • Declaring a médecin traitant, your regular doctor, improves the reimbursement.
  • In an emergency: 15 for the ambulance service, 18 for the fire brigade, 17 for the police, 112 anywhere in the European Union, 114 by text message for deaf and hard-of-hearing people.
Work
  • An employment contract can be open-ended or fixed-term.
  • Pay cannot be lower than the SMIC, the legal minimum wage.
  • Paid leave, the legal working week and safety rules are binding on the employer.
  • The labour inspectorate can be contacted free of charge if the rules are broken.
Housing and public services
  • A written lease protects the tenant, who cannot be evicted without a court decision.
  • The town hall handles the civil registry, the préfecture handles residence permits, the CAF handles housing and family benefits, France Travail supports people into work.
  • Identifying the right contact saves months of pointless paperwork.
