Application · level B2
Civic exam for French naturalisation (B2)
This is the most demanding of the three applications, and the most complete preparation. Becoming French assumes a fine knowledge of the principles of the Republic, of its history and of how it works, less to recite them than to understand what you are signing up to.
The French level expected is B2. The question bank is the widest, with more nuance in history, in culture and in the scenario questions. Those become the real differentiator: they no longer ask you merely to know a rule, but to arbitrate between several principles in an ambiguous situation.
Level B2 and the scenario questions
The difference has less to do with the volume of knowledge than with the fineness of the reasoning. In history and culture, you are expected to understand how things follow on: why laïcité was built after the Revolution, what the Fifth Republic changed in the role of the President, what the 1944 vote for women brings to a close. On institutions, the questions bear on the joints: who holds whom to account, who decides when there is disagreement, what the Conseil constitutionnel is for. But the exam is really won or lost on the twelve scenario questions. They present situations where two principles appear to collide: the freedom of conscience of a public official and the neutrality of the service, the freedom of expression of a parent and the respect owed to the school. There is never more than one right answer, and it follows from the principle that prevails in the described context. Practising naming that principle out loud, before even reading the options, is the most effective method at this level.
What this track covers
- Do not neglect culture and heritage: that is where the gaps open up at B2.
- Work on the scenario questions by saying your reasoning out loud: which principle applies, and why that one rather than another.
- Sit several complete mock exams: at this level, managing the 45 minutes matters as much as the knowledge.

Frequently asked questions
Is the civic exam enough to obtain nationality?
No. It is one step among others in a naturalisation file, which also includes conditions of residence, of income and of language level proved separately.
Does level B2 make the exam much harder?
The format does not change, but the wordings are richer and the distinctions finer. With regular practice on the real questions, the 32/40 threshold remains entirely within reach.
Should you revise differently for the scenario questions?
Yes. Rather than memorising answers, practise identifying the principle at stake in each scenario. It is that reasoning, not memory, that this part assesses.
