Application · level B1

Civic exam for the ten-year resident card (B1)

The resident card opens a ten-year right of residence. Expectations rise a notch compared with the residence permit: the wordings are longer, the answers closer to one another, and the scenario questions call for reasoning rather than simple recall.

The French level expected is B1. In practice this means questions where several answers look plausible and where you have to decide on a detail: the length of a term of office, the right administrative contact, the exact limit of a freedom. Institutions and history are covered with more precision than at A2.

What level B1 changes in practice

At this level, the wordings stop being recognition questions and become discrimination questions: several answers are plausible, and only one is right. On institutions, it is no longer enough to know that Parliament votes the law; you must tell the two chambers apart, along with how they are elected and for how long. On rights and duties, you are expected to know where a freedom stops: freedom of expression protects criticism, not insult or incitement to hatred. In history, four dates structure everything else — 1789, 1905, 1944, 1958 — and you must be able to attach each to the right event, not merely recognise it. The scenario questions, finally, require you to identify the principle at stake before choosing: is this about equality, about laïcité, about obeying the law? That reflex of analysis is what separates A2 from B1.

What this track covers

  • Fix the figures: terms of office, numbers of deputies and senators, voting age.
  • Draw careful distinctions: town hall and préfecture, National Assembly and Senate, civil and criminal justice.
  • On the scenario questions, look for the principle at stake before choosing: equality, laïcité, obeying the law.

Frequently asked questions

How does this exam differ from the one for the residence permit?

The format is identical. What changes is the vocabulary of the wordings and how fine the distinctions are: at this level, the proposed answers resemble each other more closely.

Do you have to sit the exam again if you have already passed it for another permit?

The rules depend on your situation and on the date of your previous attempt. Check that point with your préfecture or on service-public.fr: CIVIC prepares you for the exam, but does not replace official administrative information.
